Cooler nights are settling in across Newnan and Coweta County, and that means space heaters are coming out of closets and garages. A space heater is one of the biggest power users in a home, and every fall we get calls from homeowners whose breaker trips the moment the heater kicks on, whose lights dim when it runs, or whose outlet feels hot after an evening of use. Here is why space heaters cause so many electrical problems, how to use them safely, and when it is time to have a licensed electrician take a look before the cold really sets in.
Why a Space Heater Trips the Breaker
Most portable electric heaters draw about 1,500 watts on high, which is roughly 12.5 amps. A typical bedroom or living room outlet is on a 15-amp circuit, and that same circuit often feeds several rooms’ worth of outlets and lights. Add a TV, a lamp, a phone charger, or a second heater, and the circuit goes past its limit. The breaker trips to keep the wiring from overheating, which is exactly its job.
If the breaker only trips when the heater is running, the circuit is most likely overloaded. If it trips right away even with little else on, or trips with the heater off, there may be a short, a worn breaker, or a wiring problem. Our page on a breaker that trips when an appliance runs explains the difference, and our guide to a breaker that keeps tripping in Newnan covers the next steps.

What You Can Safely Check Yourself
- Move the heater to a different circuit. Try an outlet in another room, ideally one that does not share a breaker with a refrigerator, microwave, or hair dryer.
- Run it on low. The low setting often draws about half the power of high.
- Turn off other loads on that circuit. Space heaters and window AC units, hair dryers, or vacuums should not share a circuit.
- Reset the breaker once. Flip it fully off, then back on. If it trips again right away with the heater unplugged, leave it off and call an electrician.
Space Heater Safety Rules for Newnan Homes
- Plug the heater directly into a wall outlet, never into an extension cord or power strip
- Keep it at least three feet away from beds, curtains, furniture, and paper
- Choose a heater with tip-over and overheat shutoff
- Do not run it while you sleep or after you leave the room
- Check the plug and outlet after the heater has run a while; they should not feel hot
- Do not plug two heaters into the same outlet or the same circuit
- Make sure your smoke detectors work before heating season starts
Power strips are a common cause of melted plugs during the winter, because most are not built for the steady load a heater puts on them. If you rely on strips and extension cords to reach outlets, adding a properly wired outlet is a safer fix. See our new receptacles and wiring in Newnan, GA page for options. And if your smoke alarms are old, chirping, or missing from bedrooms, our smoke detector installation service can install hardwired, interconnected alarms.
Warning Signs to Stop Using the Outlet
- The plug, cord, or outlet cover feels hot to the touch
- The outlet face is discolored, brown, or melted
- You smell burning plastic or a fishy odor near the outlet
- The plug fits loosely or falls out of the outlet
- Lights flicker or dim every time the heater cycles on

If you see any of these, unplug the heater, turn off the breaker for that circuit, and leave it off until it has been checked. A loose or worn outlet under a heavy load can overheat inside the wall. Long-Term Fixes: Dedicated Circuits and Panel Capacity
If you need a space heater in the same room every winter, such as a cold bonus room, sunroom, garage workshop, or home office, a dedicated circuit gives the heater its own breaker so it no longer competes with everything else. In older Newnan homes, frequent tripping can also be a sign that the panel or electrical service is running short on capacity, especially after additions, new appliances, or an EV charger. Winter storms can also knock out power for hours. If you are thinking about backup power for heat, never run a portable generator through a wall outlet. Our generator transfer switch service connects a generator to your panel the safe way.
