Heavier pieces, like many dining room chandeliers and large entry fixtures, have to be supported independently of the box unless the box is listed and marked for the heavier weight. We check the weight on the fixture’s spec sheet, then add a brace or a rated box where it is needed.

A ceiling fan is heavier than most light fixtures, and it moves. The code only allows a box to be the sole support for a fan when it is listed for fan support, and these boxes are marked for it.
