Two Kinds of Senoia Homes, Two Kinds of EV Installs

Senoia is really two towns when it comes to electrical work. The historic neighborhood around Main Street has homes from the late 1800s and early 1900s, many with detached garages, carports or just a driveway, and electrical systems that have been updated piece by piece over the decades. The newer subdivisions around town were built with attached garages and modern 200-amp panels. An EV charger is a very different project in each.

  • Newer homes: usually an attached garage with the panel close by. These are often straightforward, one-visit installs.
  • Historic homes: we often start with the panel and service, because a 100-amp or older system may not have room for a 240-volt charging circuit. The charger may need to go outdoors, on a post or the side of a carport.

Before any EV charger goes in, we check whether the panel has the capacity and space for it.

Charging in the Historic District

If your home is inside Senoia’s Historic Neighborhood District overlay, a material change to the exterior appearance can require a Certificate of Appropriateness from the city before a building permit is issued. An EV charger mounted inside a garage usually does not change the outside of the house. An exterior charger, a new pedestal by the street, or a meter or service mast change might. We will point out anything visible from the outside so you can check with the city early, and we can suggest placements that keep equipment out of sight from the street.

Golf Carts and EVs Share the Garage

Senoia is a golf-cart-friendly town, and plenty of garages already have a cart charger plugged in. Add an EV and an older panel can get crowded fast. We give the EV charger its own dedicated circuit, keep cart chargers and freezers on separate circuits, and make sure the total load fits your service. If it does not, options include a lower amperage setting, a load management device, or a panel or service upgrade.

Level 2 Charging Basics

A Level 2 charger uses a 240-volt circuit, similar to an electric dryer, and charges several times faster than a standard outlet. You can choose:

  • A NEMA 14-50 outlet for a plug-in charger or the mobile cord that came with your car
  • A hardwired charger mounted on a wall or post, often required for higher-output units

For outdoor locations we use equipment rated for wet locations and route the circuit in conduit or underground.

Permits and Utilities in Senoia

Electrical work inside the city is permitted through the City of Senoia Building Department, with inspections performed by the city’s inspection provider. Homes outside city limits with a Senoia address are permitted through Coweta County. Senoia homes are served by Coweta-Fayette EMC or Georgia Power depending on location, and it is worth asking yours about any EV-friendly rate options. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection.

Good Upgrades to Pair With a Charger

An EV charger project is a convenient time to handle a few related items. Whole-home surge protection at the panel helps protect the charger’s electronics along with your HVAC and appliances. Brighter garage or carport lighting makes plugging in after dark easier and safer. And if your older home still has two-prong outlets or ungrounded circuits, we can look at those while we are there, or talk through a longer-term plan if the wiring is near the end of its life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an older Senoia home support an EV charger?

Often yes, once we check the service and panel. Some older homes need a panel upgrade first, especially if they still have a small service or a fuse box.

Do I need city approval for an outdoor charger in the historic district?

It depends on whether the change is visible and how the city classifies it. A Certificate of Appropriateness can be required for exterior changes in the Historic Neighborhood District, so check with the City of Senoia before installation.

Will the charger trip my breakers?

Not if it is on a properly sized dedicated circuit and the panel has capacity. That is what our load check confirms.

Can I charge my golf cart and EV at the same time?

Yes, when each has its own appropriate circuit and the panel can support both.

How long does it take?

Most installations near the panel are completed in one visit. Outdoor runs or panel work add time.
