Short answer: breakers trip more in winter because homes use more power at the same time. Heat strips, space heaters, electric blankets, holiday lights and longer lighting hours all stack up on circuits that handle summer just fine. Cold, damp weather also brings moisture into outdoor outlets and garages, which can trip GFCI breakers. If the same breaker trips again and again, a licensed electrician should find out why.

Heat Pump Heat Strips

When temperatures drop, many heat pumps lean on electric heat strips in the air handler. Heat strips draw heavy current, and a worn breaker or loose connection on that circuit often shows up on the first cold morning. See heat pump and HVAC circuit wiring.

Portable Heaters

Portable heaters are a top cause of winter trips on bedroom and living-room circuits. We cover that in detail in why a space heater trips the breaker.

Other Winter Loads

  • Holiday lights and inflatables on outdoor or garage circuits
  • Electric blankets, heated mattress pads and more lamps running in the evening
  • Block heaters, heat tape and engine warmers in garages
  • More cooking and baking, with the oven, microwave and countertop appliances running at once
  • The dryer running more often with heavy clothing and bedding

Moisture and Cold

Rain, condensation and frost can get into outdoor outlets, holiday light connections and garage receptacles. GFCI and dual-function breakers trip on the small leakage current that moisture causes. That is a safety feature, not a nuisance. See holiday lights and outdoor outlets.

When It Is More Than Extra Load

  • The breaker trips with little or nothing running
  • A breaker, outlet or the panel feels warm or smells hot
  • Lights dim hard when the heat comes on
  • The breaker will not reset

These point to a wiring, connection or breaker problem. Leave the breaker off and call a licensed electrician. Do not replace it with a larger breaker.

Space Heaters and Shared Circuits

A typical space heater on high draws about 12 to 13 amps. On a 15-amp bedroom circuit that also powers lamps, a TV and a phone charger, that is already close to the limit. Add a second heater or an electric blanket and the breaker trips. Plug heaters directly into a wall outlet, never into a power strip or extension cord, and keep them on a circuit with little else running. See space heaters tripping breakers.

Heat Pump Emergency Heat

When temperatures drop well below freezing, many heat pumps switch on backup heat strips. Those strips draw a lot of current. If the heat strip breaker trips, or the main breaker trips during a cold snap, the breaker, the connections or the circuit size may need attention. Read about heat pump and HVAC circuit wiring.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal for breakers to trip more in winter?

It is common, because winter adds heating and lighting loads. Frequent trips still mean a circuit is overloaded or something needs repair.

Can cold weather damage a breaker?

Cold alone rarely damages a breaker, but moisture and heavier loads in winter expose worn breakers and loose connections.

Why does my heat pump trip the breaker when it is cold?

Heat strips draw heavy current when the heat pump needs help. A weak breaker or loose connection on that circuit often shows up then.

Should I reset a breaker that keeps tripping?

Resetting it once is fine. If it trips again, leave it off and call an electrician.

How many space heaters can I run on one circuit?

Usually just one. A space heater on high uses most of a standard 15-amp circuit, so a second heater or other loads will often trip the breaker.

Why does my heat pump breaker trip in cold weather?

Backup heat strips draw a lot of current. A worn breaker, loose connection or undersized circuit can cause trips. We test it and repair the cause.
