Short answer: when plugging something into one outlet trips the breaker, the cause is usually one of three things. The circuit is already overloaded, the thing you plugged in has a fault, or the outlet or its wiring is damaged. Sometimes it is a GFCI or AFCI breaker reacting to a ground fault or arcing. A tripping breaker is protection doing its job. If it keeps happening, the fix is finding out why, not resetting it over and over.

Test the Appliance First

Plug the same item into an outlet on a different circuit. If it trips that breaker too, the appliance or its cord is probably the problem. Stop using it. If it works fine elsewhere, the problem is likely the original circuit, outlet or wiring.

Common Causes

  • Overload. The outlet shares a circuit with other outlets and lights. A space heater, hair dryer or microwave pushes the total over the breaker’s rating
  • A faulty appliance or cord. A damaged cord or internal short trips the breaker the moment it is plugged in or turned on
  • A worn or damaged outlet. Loose contacts, cracked housings and burned terminals can short or arc
  • Loose wiring or backstab connections. Connections that loosen over time can arc and trip an AFCI breaker
  • Ground faults. Moisture in an outdoor, garage or bathroom outlet can trip a GFCI or dual-function breaker
  • A weak breaker. Breakers can wear out, though this is less common than the causes above

What the Way It Trips Tells You

  • Trips instantly when plugged in: usually a short in the appliance, cord or outlet
  • Trips after running a while: usually an overload
  • Trips only in wet weather: usually a ground fault from moisture
  • Trips with no load at all: a wiring fault or a bad breaker. Call an electrician

When to Stop and Call an Electrician

  • The outlet is warm, discolored, cracked or smells like burning plastic
  • You see sparks or hear crackling
  • The breaker trips immediately every time you reset it
  • The breaker will not reset at all
  • Lights dim or flicker on the same circuit

Electrical repairs are not a DIY job. Do not replace the breaker with a larger one, because the wire is only rated for the original size. See why an outlet sparks and burning smell from an outlet for related warning signs.

How We Fix It

We find which outlets and lights share the circuit, test the outlet and connections, check the breaker and look for damaged wiring. The fix may be replacing a worn outlet, tightening or repairing connections, moving a heavy load to its own circuit or adding a dedicated circuit. Outlet vs. Breaker: Which Is Tripping?

If the outlet has Test and Reset buttons and it is the one that clicks off, that is a GFCI, and it is reacting to a ground fault, not an overload. If the switch in the panel flips to the middle or off position, that is the breaker. AFCI breakers trip on arcing, such as a damaged cord or loose connection. Knowing which device trips helps narrow the cause. See why a GFCI keeps tripping and why an AFCI breaker keeps tripping.

Common Loads That Trip Outlet Circuits

  • Space heaters, hair dryers and window air conditioners
  • Microwaves, toaster ovens, air fryers and coffee makers on one kitchen circuit
  • Vacuum cleaners plugged in on a circuit already running other loads
  • Freezers and refrigerators in the garage
  • Power tools and compressors

If the outlet is warm, discolored or sparks, stop using it. Read what causes warm outlets and why an outlet sparks. If you need more capacity, we can add new receptacles and circuits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it dangerous if an outlet keeps tripping the breaker?

It is a warning sign. The breaker is protecting the wiring, but repeated trips mean something is wrong and should be checked.

Can a bad outlet trip a breaker?

Yes. A damaged or worn outlet can short or arc and trip the breaker, even with nothing heavy plugged in.

Why does my space heater trip the breaker?

Space heaters draw a lot of current and often push a shared circuit over its limit. See our post on space heaters tripping breakers.

Should I install a bigger breaker?

No. The breaker must match the wire size. A larger breaker can let the wire overheat.

Can a bad outlet cause the breaker to trip?

Yes. A loose, worn or damaged outlet can create a short or arc that trips the breaker. We test the outlet and its connections.
