You put in a brand-new bulb, flip the switch, and nothing happens. It is one of the most common calls we get from homeowners in Newnan and Coweta County, and the good news is that the cause is usually simple to find. Sometimes it is the bulb or the switch, and sometimes it is a loose connection or a worn-out fixture that needs a licensed electrician. Here is how to narrow it down safely, what you can check yourself, and when it is time to call.
Start With the Simple Things
- Try a bulb you know works. New bulbs can be bad out of the box. Test one from a lamp that is working right now.
- Check the bulb type. Some LED bulbs will not work, or will flicker, on older dimmers or in enclosed fixtures. Make sure the bulb is rated for the fixture and the dimmer.
- Look for a second switch. Hallways, stairs, and big rooms often have three-way switches. If one is in an odd position, the light may seem dead from the other switch.
- Check the breaker. Look for a breaker in the middle position or fully off. Flip it all the way off, then back on, once.
- Check for a tripped GFCI. Bathroom, garage, porch, and basement lights are sometimes wired through a GFCI outlet. Press reset on nearby GFCI outlets.
If a GFCI will not reset, our page on a GFCI outlet not resetting in Newnan explains what that usually means. If the breaker trips again right away, leave it off and see our guide to a breaker that keeps tripping.
Common Reasons a Light Fixture Stops Working
- A worn-out switch. Switches wear out after years of use. A switch that feels loose, clicks without doing anything, or works only sometimes is a common culprit.
- A failed dimmer. Older dimmers often fail after LED bulbs go in, or they hum, buzz, and flicker before they quit.
- A loose wire connection. A connection can loosen at the switch, the fixture, or another device on the same circuit. Lights that work only when you tap the fixture or wiggle the switch point to this.
- A worn socket. The small brass tab in the socket can flatten over time so it no longer touches the bulb. Heat from old incandescent bulbs makes this worse.
- A failed LED fixture or driver. Many newer fixtures have built-in LEDs with no bulb to change. When the LED module or driver fails, the fixture usually needs replacing.
- A problem with the circuit. If other lights or outlets nearby are dead too, the issue may be upstream, not in the fixture.

Warning Signs to Stop and Call an Electrician
- A burning smell, scorch marks, or a discolored switch plate or fixture base
- A switch or dimmer that feels warm or hot to the touch
- Buzzing, crackling, or sizzling from the fixture or switch
- Lights that dim or flicker when an appliance turns on
- Several lights or outlets out at the same time with no tripped breaker
- A fixture that went out after water got into a bathroom, attic, or outdoor box
Any of these can mean a loose or overheating connection, which should be checked before the circuit is used again. Turn the breaker off and leave it off. Learn more about a burning smell from an outlet or switch, or let our electrical troubleshooting and repairs team track down the cause.
Repair or Replace the Fixture?
If the switch, wiring, and circuit test fine, the fixture itself is usually the problem. A simple fixture with a worn socket can sometimes be repaired, but an older or integrated LED fixture is often worth replacing, especially if you have wanted a brighter or more efficient light anyway. Our light and ceiling fan repair service handles fixtures that have stopped working, and our lighting installation in Newnan, GA covers new fixtures, chandeliers, pendants, and under-cabinet lights.
Replacing a fixture is also a good time to upgrade the control. A modern LED-compatible dimmer stops flicker and buzz, and recessed LED lights can brighten a dim kitchen, hallway, or bonus room. See our dimmer switch installation and LED recessed lighting in Newnan pages for ideas.
Why You Should Not Guess Inside the Box
Changing a bulb or resetting a breaker is fine for any homeowner. Opening a switch box or taking down a fixture is different. Older Newnan homes can have brittle wiring, shared neutrals, or connections from past do-it-yourself work that are easy to make worse. A licensed electrician can test the circuit, find the real cause, and fix it the right way the first time.
